When Lululemon dropped their first men’s running shoe last year, I was curious. I’d been impressed enough with the brand’s apparel that I figured they deserved a shot on the road. So I picked up the Beyondfeel, laced them up, and took them out for a run.
Four runs later, I put them in my gym bag and haven’t looked back.
Here’s the full story.
The Specs on Paper
The Beyondfeel is positioned as Lululemon’s maximum cushion running shoe. At 10.8oz (size 9) with a 10mm heel-to-toe drop, a supercritical foam midsole, and a pressure-mapped outsole, it reads like a solid everyday trainer. At $198 CAD, you get a seamless mesh upper, high-abrasion rubber outsole, and sizing from 7 to 14. On paper, reasonable.
What Happened on the Road
The problem wasn’t comfort. They’re genuinely comfortable shoes. The problem is that comfort and performance are two different things, and the Beyondfeel delivers the first at the expense of the second.
After four or five runs, the feedback was the same every time: heavy, bulky, and flat-out unresponsive. At 10.8oz they’re not the heaviest shoe out there, but they feel heavier than that number suggests. There’s no snap, no energy return, nothing that makes you want to push the pace. For a casual jog around the block, fine. For anyone trying to actually train, it’s like running in wet sand.
For context, I came off the Adidas Boston 13 for this review. That shoe is built to go. The Beyondfeel is built to exist comfortably on your foot. Different goals entirely.
Who They Might Actually Work For
To be fair, I think newer runners who prioritize comfort over performance could genuinely enjoy these. If you’re just getting into running, not worried about pace, and want something that feels good from step one with no break-in period, the Beyondfeel delivers that. They’re plush, supportive, and easy to wear. Lululemon’s quality is real.
But if you have any running background at all, you’ll probably feel the limitations quickly.
The Gym Pivot
Here’s where the story gets better. A few weeks after benching them from running duty, I threw them on for a gym session. And they were great.
The same cushioning that felt like a liability on the road works perfectly when you’re lifting, doing circuits, or getting through a class. You’re not asking the shoe for responsiveness on a squat rack. You want comfort and stability, and that’s exactly what the Beyondfeel gives you. They’ve been a regular in the rotation ever since.
The Verdict
The Lululemon Beyondfeel is not a running shoe for runners. It’s a comfortable, well-made athletic shoe that happens to be marketed as a running shoe. If you’re a newer runner or primarily a gym-goer who occasionally jogs, they might be a perfect fit. If you’re training with any kind of intent, you’ll want to look elsewhere.
At $198 CAD, they’re not cheap. But as a gym shoe that can handle some light running? The value case is actually pretty solid.
For serious road work, keep looking. For everything else, Lululemon has quietly made a pretty good workout shoe.
