The Definitive List of Excuses Torontonians Use to Not Run (and Which Ones Are Actually Valid)

I’ve used every excuse on this list. Some of them are cowardice dressed up as logic. Some of them are completely reasonable. Here’s how to tell the difference.

“There’s a Blue Jays game and King West is a write off”

Valid. If you’re trying to get anywhere near the Ex or the waterfront on a game night, you’re not running, you’re doing a slow motion obstacle course through people in jerseys. Reroute or stay home, no shame in it.

“The path is full of cyclists going way too fast”

Also valid, and I already wrote an entire power ranking about this. The Martin Goodman Trail on a nice Saturday is not a running path, it’s a shared hazard zone. This one’s not an excuse, it’s a legitimate safety consideration.

“It’s construction season”

It’s always construction season. This is Toronto. If you wait for a construction free route you will die of old age still waiting. Not valid, just reroute and get on with it.

“It’s minus fifteen and my face hurts just thinking about it”

Valid for the first two weeks of a cold snap. After that you’re just choosing to be a fair weather runner, which is fine, but call it what it is.

“I don’t want to run for the streetcar and then also run my run”

This is a real phenomenon and nobody talks about it. Not really a valid excuse to skip the whole run, more just a mood you have to push through.

“The Gardiner is dripping on me again”

One hundred percent valid. Nobody signed up to run under a crumbling elevated highway while it actively rains concrete water on them.

“I already did my steps walking to the streetcar, then to the subway, then from the subway”

Not valid, but I respect the creativity.

“It’s too nice out and I want to just sit on a patio instead”

The most honest excuse on this list. Also not valid, but at least you’re not lying to yourself.

The truth is most of these aren’t really about the run itself, they’re about whether you feel like doing something hard today. Some days the city genuinely gets in your way. Most days it’s just an easy thing to blame instead of admitting you didn’t feel like it. I get it either way, I’ve used half of these excuses in the same week.
